Victoria University on Saturday hosted a group of young students in a move to tip them on growing their careers and how to best attain their ambitions. During the ‘Student of the Future’ themed event, youths were cautioned to desist from misusing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) platforms such as social media but rather utilize them to do business and generate money.
James Sakka, the Executive Director National Information Technology Association (NITA-U) in his remarks said ICT has grown to become a big resource for information especially for school going youths.
“Today, the internet is a source of information but young people continue to misuse it instead of acquiring more knowledge to use in their academic work. Some other creative youths are using social media to do business and engaging in work that pays them like social media marketing,” Sakka stated.
He was however quick to highlight the security risks involved in using such online platforms which are often compromised by people with the wrong motives. On the part of government, he said plans are underway to reduce the cost of internet bandwidth especially for learning institutions.
Dr. Sabrina Kitaka, a pediatrician and professor at Makerere College of Health Sciences Mulago who also made a presentation to the gathering of over 200 students warned of the threat that technology advancement pauses to young people.
“Young people are absorbed in Facebook, WhatsApp and other platforms and they’ve become an addiction. Some of the Masters students that I teach hardly concentrate on what I am saying because they are stuck on their phones.”
She urged them to seek role models for mentorship emphasizing the role of parents in directing their children’s career paths.
The one day career guidance workshop also featured popular motivational speaker Ethan Musolini and CEO of the Independent Magazine Andrew Mwenda who shared their personal stories to inspire the youthful students.
Participants also got an opportunity to interact with Victoria University’s heads of Faculty and learn about the various courses offered by the university.
