Patrick Edema scored two crucial penalties to gift Sport Club Victoria University with their first major trophy in Ugandan football following a 5-3 win in penalty shootouts after 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Joseph Mpande had put Vipers in the lead in the 77th minute when SCVU team captain Denis Iguma held the ball in the box. And as all appeared to be done, Edema equalised from the spot in the last minute to force the spot kicks in which he notched the all important penalty.
“I have looked up to these chances. Thank God they came and I used them maximally,” Edema said after the match.
The win also gave SCVU coach Alex Isabirye his second successive Uganda Cup title after he beat the same Viper while at URA FC last year.
SCVU went into the final having conceded twice, scoring eight times while Vipers had 10 goals and conceded only one.
To reach the final, Vipers eliminated KCCA FC in the quarterfinal before a 3-0 aggregate win over former holders URA FC while SCVU edged out Bright Stars in the last eight and Simba in the semi-finals.
Victoria University players, who had camped for a week in Masindi have broken off to a dance night out before returning to Kampala on Monday.
